the number of vs a number of
the number of + 복수명사 | 단수 — The number of students is increasing. |
a number of + 복수명사 | 복수 — A number of students are absent. |
the number of = "그 숫자"가 진짜 주어(단수) / a number of = "many"처럼 작동, 뒤 명사가 주어(복수)
집합명사 (team, family, staff...)

of 뒤 명사가 결정권을 가짐 — the number of(항상 단수, 관용 고정)와 대조적으로 유동적. none of는 격식 단수 원칙, 구어에선 복수도 흔함.
